![]() Working out which techs to unlock what is important as some tech trees can lead you down the garden path… especially the one about building gardens and paths. ![]() Much like EVE you will find yourself queuing up options and logging while they carry themselves out.Ī large part of the game is researching new techs which unlock further aspects of the game an aspect actually made important by the limited amount of research points you are given. RTS MMO’s by their nature must limit the actions of their players so as to maintain some semblance of balance. As long as your pace is slow and patient. Kingdoms reminds me of the browser based strategy game ‘Utopia,’ which took up much of my time during my early high school years, which probably could have been better spent (in hindsight). The depth to this game lies on the village, castle and combat options and how these revolve around your surrounding players. ![]() The animations are standard RTS fare, enhanced by the mysterious presence of free roaming chickens. The music has a top notch medieval feel to it… which I got sick of after about ten minutes and I replaced it with some of my own music in the background. The graphics aren’t top notch but don’t necessarily incite the overpowering apathy that sometimes overcomes me when I’m faced with subpar pixilation. So let’s put on our free tinted glasses and take a hard look at what this title has to offer. Essentially since Kingdoms is attempting a stab at the difficult genre of the RTS MMO, and has done quite well for itself, especially when I compare it to the recent anti-climax that was Age Of Empires Online.įirstly, it’s free. The game purports to be the “world’s first persistent castle MMO” and it may just have something going for it. Kingdoms holds an uncertain place in that strange genre of casual MMOs, usually reserved for Facebook titles or independent browser-based games. The game that I am going to review today is Stronghold Kingdoms, which was recently released on Steam. For nothing but the bandwidth they’ll take up and the requirement to sell your soul to the Valve digital distribution platform, you can gain access to hundreds of hours of entertainment through Steam. Steam has a section devoted to free games. If you haven’t yet discovered it, I’ll let you in on a great piece of news. Once your fortress is up and running, the jobs will become available to you and your players and, if you play your cards right, you'll have an unassailable stronghold to protect your city from any attack.I’m going to take a quick sojourn from my crusade to get lonely gamers laid and begin a tangent of reviews on the best games of all those games that are free and rather unheard of. If your base hasn't yet been constructed, you'll be forced to choose one of two options: build either a guard dog or a barricade. At the start of each season, you will be forced to select from several pre-determined jobs to do depending upon what kind of fortress you're constructing. One of the game's most riveting aspects is its persistent economy system that ties everything together in the form of a continually replenishing list of jobs and abilities that are required to build and maintain your impenetrable castle. The tournaments update this content regularly, so that players always have something fresh to try out once they reach a higher level. Some of this content can also be played independently as you attempt to build up your realm and challenge other players for control of their realms. In this case, the lack of visual content is compensated for by a wealth of in-game content, the majority of which deals with upgrading your castles and fortresses to obtain new abilities and weapons. As with any other similar titles on the market today, the majority of players will find the game world to be quite empty, with only a few props (such as towers and gates) scattered about and very little else to do. The game's great strength lies in its solid implementation of a real time strategy theme that has been crafted into a complete narrative with a strong underlying story line and captivating visuals. If you're able to gather resources in sufficient quantities, you'll be able to afford the cost of maintaining and improving your castle - an important step on your journey to dominance. Once you've got your people in place, start excavating their plots and looking for valuable resources such as gems, gold, and wood. You can build your own kingdom and then invite other players to join your community and take up residency within your walls. Developed by Firefly Studios, the makers of CityVille, it is similar to their popular similar-styled Settlers of Canaan game but with an even deeper and more involving story. Stronghold Kingdoms is an award winning, multi-faceted real-time strategy massively multiplayer online role-playing game.
